The following
pages contain outlines for you to use in maintaining
an active safety program. At times, our safety committees
and other employees tend to get bored or feel that since
there are no illnesses or injuries to discuss, there
is no need to meet. These topic outlines are designed
to help your committee maintain active awareness of
some of the workplace hazards that may exist.
All of this material (including the sample training
log) is prepared in "Microsoft Word" software, version
'97. If you would like to have this program on a disk,
please advise one of the OTA staff at the workshop,
and we will forward it to you. There will be a nominal
fee, to cover the cost of material and postage.
Oregon (and some other states) have a requirement that
monthly safety committee meetings be held, and that
certain items be accomplished on the agenda. These topics
are intended to be covered in addition to the regular
business of the safety committee. Each topic is contained
to one page, and can be used as an outline for the safety
official (usually the safety committee chairperson)
to conduct a brief meeting as a reminder for others
to be aware of hazards.
Oregon Trucking Associations has a library of video
and written material that can be used in conjunction
with any of these topics. Go to OTA's video
library listing now. If you would like additional
material for your meeting, please call at least ten
days in advance so we can be sure to deliver your material
in time for your meeting.
Remember, there are no absolutes in conducting a good
safety meeting. You may spend 10 minutes or you may
spend an hour, depending on the topics and recent injuries
or illnesses. Make sure you meet in a comfortable area
that is free of interruptions. Make sure others have
an opportunity to contribute. Make sure you direct comments
in a positive, problem solving nature, rather than one
of fixing blame.
In all cases, be sure to document your safety meetings
with written minutes. If it is a formal safety committee
meeting, the minutes must be posted for all employees
to see. If it is an employee training session, make
sure all in attendance sign a roster and keep it in
your training files. Also keep a copy of the material
covered in your training files.
